Broughty Athletic 1 Lochee United 1
A late Logan Davie goal earned Lochee United a point in a disappointing game at Whitton Park.
None of the three goalkeepers on duty had much to do as chances were few and far between.
Broughty were first to attack but Kevin Milne was crowded out on the point of shooting and Jamie Winter managed to force the first corner of the game.
Connor Birse and Grant Lawson both had chances for Lochee but failed to test keeper Duncan McPherson.
A back header from Greg Kirk was seized upon by Bluebells keeper Mark Stewart before Milne could pounce, but the first save of any note came from Stewart in the 35th minute when he saved a shot from former Thomson Park player Brian Clark.
The closest Lochee came to opening the scoring was when Cameron McMahon got his head to a Dougie Cameron corner kick, but the young midfielder headed wide. The Fed goalkeeper’s first save of any note came in the 10th minute of the second half when he turned a Birse effort round the post.
That was to be the last contribution from McPherson as he went down with a bad injury and had to be substituted. With no goalie sub on the bench Danny Cavanagh came on, with Fraser Smith going between the posts.
Cavanagh was only on the field a few minutes when he tried a shot that flew over the Lochee bar.
With 20 minutes to go the home side broke the deadlock. MILNE chased a long ball down the wing and sent in a looping shot that ended up in the Lochee net.
Both sides were forced into substitutions at this stage with Danny Millar replacing Kirk and Chris Liversedge coming on for injured goalscorer Milne.
It must have been frustrating for the Lochee bench and fans that they hadn’t yet tested makeshift keeper Smith, but they began to exert more pressure on the Fed defence and Lawson blazed over from close in.
They finally got their reward in the final minute of normal time, though there was still a considerable amount of injury time to be played due to McPherson’s injury.
From a Stephen Mcnally long throw-in the ball bounced around off a few players and, rather fortuitously, landed perfectly for DAVIE, who had the simple task of heading it into the net from close range.
The Bluebells tried hard for the winner but sub keeper Smith came up with several good punch-outs to keep them at bay.
